Cisco is transforming traditional network management by focusing on the strengths of Internet-based architectures for greater accessibility and simplification of network management tools, tasks, and processes. Cisco's network management strategy, termed Assured Network Services, calls for a migration from traditional legacy applications to a Web-based model with the following characteristics:
Current Cisco network management products are a mix of new Web-based products and console-based applications.
CiscoWorks2000 is the new product family designed to carry forward the functionality in CiscoWorks, Cisco Resource Manager, and CiscoWorks for Switched Internetworks (CWSI). Together, the new management products include enhanced tools, significant new functionality, and standards-based third-party integration tools. Specifically, CiscoWorks2000 is comprised of:
Cisco network management tools also include other important standalone applications such as NetSys and NetFlow Collector or hardware products such as SwitchProbes and Network Analysis Modules.
Cisco Resource Manager Essentials is a powerful suite of Web-based network management solutions within the CiscoWorks2000 family for managing routers, access servers, and switches. Essentials delivers significant productivity improvements for network managers performing day-to-day administrative tasks. Its browser interface allows easy access to information critical to network uptime and simplifies time-consuming administrative tasks in small- to large-scale enterprise networks. Essentials is composed of seven primary applications: Configuration Manager, Change Audit Services, Inventory Manager, Availability Manager, Syslog Analyzer, Software Image Manager, and Cisco Management Connection. These applications combine to streamline the tasks of managing network inventory and device changes, archiving and searching configuration files, and rapidly deploying new software images. Essentials also helps troubleshoot the basic connectivity status of critical network devices and provides information needed for hardware capacity planning.

CWSI Campus is a comprehensive management solution within the CiscoWorks2000 family for managing Cisco Catalyst and LightStream switches. A suite of applications, CWSI Campus offers extensive network discovery and display, configuration, RMON/RMON2 traffic, and LAN/WAN performance management capabilities on a device and network-wide basis.
CWSI Campus enables network supervisors to manage enterprise switches as a system, freeing them from time-consuming device-by-device configuration, monitoring, and problem resolution tasks. Powerful discovery and topology display tools provide a quick and intuitive view of the network's physical and logical link configuration integrity. Network performance can be easily assessed through real-time analysis of traffic data using RMON/RMON2 data collection from switches, Cisco's line of SwitchProbe® devices, or Catalyst 5000 Network Analysis Modules. VLAN and ATM configuration is simplified through intuitive graphical tools that replace lengthy and time-consuming command-line setup routines.

Internetwork Performance Monitor (IPM) Version 2.0 is a network response time and availability troubleshooting application. This tool empowers network engineers to proactively troubleshoot network response times utilizing real time and historical reports.
IPM complements Cisco's powerful CiscoWorks2000 family of enterprise management tools by providing wide-area monitoring solutions. Built on Web standards, IPM shares device inventory knowledge with other CiscoWorks2000 products. IPM extends the CiscoWorks2000 solution set to provide the framework from which to manage VPN environments.
With the introduction of IPM, network managers now have the tools they need to isolate performance problems, locate bottlenecks, diagnose latency, and perform trend analysis in the network. Working with the Response Time Reporter (RTR) feature provided in the Cisco IOS software, IPM can determine the possible network paths used between two devices and display the response time for each of the router hops in each path without a dedicated hardware probe.

Avoid costly network configuration problems---have your network checked by Netsys! Fixing network problems is expensive and time-consuming. The combination of costly downtime and time-consuming fault isolation and repair can bring a business to its knees. Geographically dispersed networks amplify the problem because the length and expense of downtime often increase, and fixing the problem can require travel. Most reported network problems are configuration related. More than 40 percent of technical support calls involve device misconfigurations. As the number of routers grows, configuration problems become harder to detect and avoid. The result is either operational or latent configuration problems.

Cisco Systems offers a complete family of dedicated, enhanced LAN, WAN, and ATM Remote Monitoring (RMON) probes for comprehensive, end-to-end, seven-layer monitoring of an enterprise network. SwitchProbe products provide a powerful distributed management architecture for performing traffic analysis, troubleshooting, trend reporting, and proactive network management. The real-time traffic analysis and trend reporting capabilities of SwitchProbe devices provide visibility into network behavior for long-term planning. They provide the diagnostic information needed for troubleshooting the Media Access Control (MAC), network, or application-layer problems before they can affect network availability. The probes' network-based thresholding and alarm capabilities provide an early warning system to improve network reliability and availability.
