Cisco LocalDirector

Cisco LocalDirector is a high-availability Internet appliance for mission-critical TCP and UDP applications such as E-commerce Web servers, database applications, intranet servers, DNS servers, and TN3270 services. It is an integrated solution with a secure real-time embedded operating system that intelligently load balances TCP and UDP traffic across multiple servers. Appearing as a single virtual server, it delivers optimized performance by intelligently distributing client requests across clusters of heterogeneous servers.

LocalDirector ensures maximum client access while providing flexible scalability for traffic spikes and system maintenance. Servers can be automatically and transparently placed in or out of service, for server fault tolerance, quick response to sudden increases in traffic, and server maintenance with no site downtime. LocalDirector itself is equipped with a hot standby fail-over mechanism, ensuring that its function is highly available. In addition, LocalDirector can be configured so that virtual and real servers back up each other for fail-over depth.

Cisco DistributedDirector1

DistributedDirector provides dynamic, transparent, and scalable Internet traffic load distribution between multiple geographically dispersed servers.

DistributedDirector is the only global Internet service scaling solution that utilizes Cisco Internetwork Operating System (Cisco IOS) software and leverages routing table information in the network infrastructure to make "network intelligent" load distribution decisions.

DistributedDirector uses routing table intelligence in the network infrastructure to transparently redirect end-user service requests to the closest responsive server, which increases access performance and reduces transmission costs. Users need only a single subdomain name or Universal Resource Locator (URL)-embedded hostname for accessing a distributed set of servers, thus providing the appearance of a single virtual server. This feature eliminates the need for end users to choose a server from a list of possible sites.
