Cisco Routers and Access Products Overview

Cisco's full line of routers ranges from home office access routers to central site access servers. The scope of Cisco's products supports a significant number of solution scenarios.

Ease of Use

Cisco's router configuration tools make it easy for end users, network administrators, resellers and consultants to install Cisco routers.

Cisco FastStep is an easy-to-use Microsoft Windows 95-, 98-, and NT 4.0-based software tool that simplifies the setup, monitoring, and troubleshooting of Cisco routers for small office and home office users. Cisco FastStep leads the user through a step-by-step, wizards-based procedure that simplifies the configuration of a Cisco router connected to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) or remote corporate network. A user can set up a Cisco 700, 800, or 1600 series router with FastStep software.

FastStep uses a graphical display of the process and a help box to lead the user through setting up the router.

FastStep software is available (no login required) from the CCO Software Center, or on a separate CD-R0M located in every accessory kit for supported products. For more information, see the Cisco FastStep Web site at http://www.cisco.com/go/faststep.

Cisco ConfigMaker is designed to configure a small to medium network of Cisco routers, switches, hubs, and other network devices from a single PC. Cisco ConfigMaker is an easy-to-use Microsoft Windows 95, 98, and NT 4.0-based software tool. Cisco ConfigMaker is designed for resellers, consultants, and network administrators who are proficient in LAN and WAN fundamentals and basic network design.

For fast and efficient configuration of Ethernet networks and WAN connectivity, Cisco ConfigMaker prompts users through the setup process. Online WAN configuration worksheets list important information that the network administrator must obtain from the Internet service provider or WAN service provider before configuring the devices. To configure devices:

The ConfigMaker graphical user interface displays a network diagram that shows the network devices in relationship to each other. Wizards are accessed from the Task List, which keeps track of progress.

ConfigMaker supports 800, 1600, 1720, 2500, 2600, 3600, and 4500/4700 routers, switches, and the Cisco IOS Firewall Feature Set. Check documentation for more details on specific modules and models supported. No previous experience with the Cisco IOS® software command line interface is required. ConfigMaker is available (no login required) from the CCO Software Center, or on a separate CD-ROM located in every Software Feature Pack for supported products. For more information, See the Cisco Configmaker Web site at http://www.cisco/go/configmaker.

Cisco 700 Series

The Cisco 700 series ISDN router provides affordable, fast Internet access for every PC in a small office. It is recommended for small offices and home offices of up to five users.

Small offices that want to provide Internet access for every PC can use a single Cisco 700 and ISDN line, instead of multiple modems or TAs and multiple phone lines. Companies who choose to upgrade to ISDN with a Cisco 700 series router will increase the speed of their traditional analog modem connection by a factor of five.

Cisco 3300 Series

The Cisco ISR 3303 combines SONET reliability and Layer 3 awareness at the edge of the network in a single platform. The Cisco ISR 3303 is generally deployed at the edge of the SONET network in a multi-tenant environment. Traditional leased-line DS1 services can be offered to support PBX digital trunk interfaces, digital loop carrier systems, T1 channel banks, T1 interfaces to Frame relay FRADs, or ATM T1 multiplexers. The Ethernet interfaces can support a variety of service interfaces that can be configured for either bridging or routing, and connect to a local LAN via 10BaseT to a hub, switch, or router.

These DS1 and 10BaseT interfaces can be then be mapped into a channelized SONET OC-3 interface for WAN connectivity into a SONET network either using Automatic Protection Switching (APS) or Uni-directional Path Switched Ring (UPSR) protection mechanisms. T1/DS1 services are mapped into VT 1.5s. Ethernet services are mapped into SONET compliant Wideband Packet-over-SONET (WPOS). WPOS provides data bandwidth scalability by mapping Ethernet services via PPP into a single DS1 for service rates of 1.4 Mbps, These DS1s encapsulating the data are then mapped directly into SONET to ensure network compatibility.

The system supports 1:1 redundancy for system processor/router, IOS and config file, Ethernet interfaces, DS1 interfaces, and system power. Pricing for a fully equipped system, including software, is $22,500.

Cisco 4000 Series

The Cisco 4000 Series routers are the leading modular midrange/regional routers in the industry. The modular interfaces supported include Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, ISDN Basic Rate Interface (BRI), ISDN Primary Rate Interface (PRI), serial and channelized T1/E1, async, ATM, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), and High-Speed Serial Interface (HSSI).

The full suite of high-speed LAN support (Fast Ethernet, FDDI, ATM) provides the investment protection necessary for a platform that can grow with the increased local bandwidth generated from multimedia applications and the migration from a shared to a switched environment. Their high-performance RISC CPUs make the Cisco 4500-M and 4700-M excellent choices for supporting software functionality that is either calculation intensive or process switched. This performance, in conjunction with high-density synchronous and asynchronous serial interfaces, makes the Cisco 4000 Series a particularly good fit for integrating legacy equipment and protocols such as SNA into a robust, end-to-end IP network.

When to Sell

Cisco 7200 Series

The Cisco 7200 series routers deliver exceptional price/performance to meet the following requirements: regional and branch offices that need gateway connectivity to the WAN and the Internet; remote site aggregation for enterprise and service providers where multiple dispersed locations are interconnected through a central site; sites that require IBM data center connectivity; and sites that require multifunction capabilities that combine all the above for multiservice voice, video, and data traffic.

A key strength of the Cisco 7200 is its modularity. With a choice of 2-, 4- and 6-slot chassis, three processors providing up to 200 kpps, an extensive range of LAN and WAN interfaces with up to 48 ports, and single or dual power supplies, the customer gets the performance and capacity required. This modularity also provides investment protection and a guaranteed expansion path.
