Cisco Systems Overview

Cisco Systems is the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet. Cisco's products and services give people access to the information they need by connecting information devices through intelligent, secure, and reliable networks. Our hardware and software products link computers so people have access to information, regardless of differences in time, place, or type of computer system. Customers benefit from Cisco networking solutions through more efficient exchange of information, which in turn leads to cost savings, process efficiencies, and closer relationships with customers, business partners, and employees.

Cisco solutions are the networking foundation of thousands of companies, universities, utilities, and government agencies worldwide. We are also a driving force behind the global Internet, where more than 80 percent of the backbone routers are from Cisco.

Cisco uses the Internet to conduct a substantial amount of its business. For example, we provide more than 70 percent of our customer support over the Internet while maintaining a high level of customer satisfaction. Our goal is to help our customers improve their business by establishing interactive and engaging electronic business relationships with their global customers, partners, prospects, suppliers, and employees.

The Cisco IOS Difference

Cisco IOS software is the platform that delivers network services and enables networked applications. Cisco IOS software differentiates Cisco products from other industry alternatives. It is the unifying thread, the glue, that integrates components of our products. It solves security problems; it solves scalability problems; it even keeps unnecessary traffic off the WAN to reduce service costs. Cisco IOS technologies span across Cisco LAN and WAN system elements, ensuring interoperability, centralized manageability, and reliability.

Guaranteed Interoperability

Cisco IOS software ensures interoperability among Cisco routers, switches, and hubs within the main office and Cisco remote site routers to simplify installation and management. Cisco IOS software protects users' investments by integrating all network platforms and by supporting LAN and WAN standards that allow interoperability with other vendors. This scenario enables the economical expansion of bandwidth and the adoption of new technologies while preserving the investment in the existing network infrastructure.

Unified Management

Cisco IOS software provides an array of network management capabilities designed to meet the needs of today's distributed networks. Support for Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP), Telnet, and Remote Monitoring (RMON) allow Cisco products to be managed from a central site, minimizing administrative costs and maximizing network uptime. A common network management application, CiscoWorks Windows provides an integrated and consistent graphical interface to ease management and troubleshooting of Cisco router, switches, and hub products.

Security

Security is a critical requisite for companies to realize the vast business potential of the Internet. Multidimensional filters on Cisco routers prevent users from knowing that other users or resources are even on the network. Encrypted passwords, extended access lists, accounting, and logging features on the routers provide protection from and information about unauthorized access attempts. Physical firewalling, data encryption, and remote access security solutions protect corporate information and assets, while allowing connection to the Internet and remote users. On the LAN side, secure addressing capabilities on the Catalyst series of switches ensure that network resource access is restricted to only authorized users. No other vendor comes close to providing the level of WAN and LAN security of Cisco products.

Bandwidth Optimization

Recurring WAN services, such as Integrated Services Digital Network (ISDN) or Frame Relay, can be the most expensive component of the overall cost of ownership. Cisco IOS software brings a richness of features for eliminating unnecessary traffic across WAN links and intelligently selecting the most economical WAN links available. An unparalleled breadth of features such as snapshot routing, protocol spoofing, priority and custom queuing, dial-on-demand (DDR) routing, bandwidth on demand (BOD), and compression are all available to optimize the use of WAN bandwidth and reduce WAN service costs.

Enhanced Multimedia Support

The use of multiprotocol multicast traffic has increased with the delivery of new applications such as Insoft INTV!, CUSeeMe, and Apple QuickTime audio/video conferencing packages, video servers, and the financial communities' multicast-delivered market data. This type of traffic is typically generated as broadcasts; therefore, all workstations receive the packets and decide to accept or reject them. Although this process runs in the background on most workstations, it consumes a portion of the network bandwidth available to them, potentially keeping critical data from reaching the end station. All Catalyst® series switches support Cisco Group Management Protocol (CGMP) to prevent the flooding of IP multicast packets to all switched ports, sending them instead to only those ports interested in the traffic. CGMP works with and is based on the standards-based Internet Group Management Protocol (IGMP) supported in Cisco routers. In addition, these routers support resource allocation technologies such as Protocol Independent Multicast (PIM), Weighted Fair Queuing (WFQ), and Resource Reservation Protocol (RSVP) to meet the special demands of emerging audio and video services. In contrast, most other vendors offer none of these critical features.

Cisco Service and Support---Understanding Your Business

Cisco understands that good service and support are important to the success of your business. In fact, research shows that your service and support business will grow 23 percent per year for the next five years. Are you ready?

Cisco is ready and is here to help. We realize that all companies have differing service and support requirements, and we have designed programs that meet the particular demands of your business. Many of these programs include several service level-options, so you have the flexibility to define the level that best addresses your needs. Through Cisco's Small and Medium Business Program, for example, you can combine your value-added services with Cisco's service elements and then resell the package to your customers. In addition, the program enables you to move products more quickly, thus leading to faster bookings. The Small and Medium Business Program not only increases the return on your Cisco investment, it also increases your profits. Using Cisco's service and support program also leads to increased customer satisfaction, and when your customers are satisfied, they will remain loyal to you and will buy more from you.

Packaged Service Options

Cisco's packaged service options give you a convenient way to sell service directly to your customers or combine Cisco's packaged service options with your own service offerings to deliver support tailored to your specific customers or markets.

Cisco's packaged service options give you and your customers flexibility in meeting their service and support needs. By combining your value-added services with packaged service options from Cisco, you can increase product margins, retain account control, increase service revenue, and ensure customers of industry-leading service and support.
