Software Comparison

All 3500-XLs are available with Standard software (-A) or Enterprise software (-EN).

Standard Edition (–A)

All of these switches are software upgradeable. Customers who want to take advantage of the Enterprise Edition features for the Catalyst 3500 series XL product line can simply and inexpensively upgrade their switches with the Catalyst 3500 series XL Enterprise Edition software.

The Standard Edition switches provide support for Cisco Visual Switch Manager (CVSM), Network Time Protocol (NTP), port-based Virtual LANS (VLANs), Cisco Group Management Protocol (CGMP) fast leave, network port, Fast EtherChannel
technology and Gigabit EtherChannel technology.  The switches may be managed using the built-in Web console, SNMP, or command line interface.

Enterprise Edition (-EN)

The Enterprise Edition switches include support for all of the Standard Edition features, as well as the Cisco end-to-end VLAN architecture, specifically, Inter-Switch Link (ISL) and 802.1Q VLAN tagging support, and VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP). In addition, Uplink Fast and TACACS+ are also supported in the Enterprise Edition switches.
